“FOR THE Love of Children” is the theme of the 2008 edition of the Red Cross Children’s Carnival Competition which takes place at the Northern Greens of the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, on January 26.

The event was launched recently with a small ceremony at the Red Cross Northern Branch Office in Port-of-Spain. Registration for the competition is now in progress and continues until next Friday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. Tickets went on sale from yesterday at a cost of $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Show time is at 11 am sharp.

Among those speaking at the launch was First Lady Dr Jean Ramjohn Richards, patron of the Red Cross Children’s Carnival, who praised all those associated with the event.

“The children seem to be setting a pace for us but I’m not sure how many are following. This segment of the celebration is keeping alive the creativity of Carnival and year after year the children’s costumes remind us of what we can do to make the difference between what we have here and what is displayed in the Carnivals of other countries.

“The children are able to enjoy themselves in an atmosphere of keen competition based only on the quality of costuming and interpretation of the subjects they portray.”

Richards was also presented with a cheque by Michelle Rollingson-Pierre of Citi, the main sponsor of the event. Over the last 13 years, Citi has contributed $500,000 to the Children’s Carnival. Other sponsors, including bpTT, Bermudez, Gayelle, KFC, Smalta, Toyota and Blue Mountain Water, also presented their contributions to the Red Cross committee.

Tickets for the competition are available at the Red Cross Northern Branch; Craft Creators at The Falls, West Mall; Benetton in Long Circular Mall; and at the Savannah on the day of the competition.
